Suggest a newer camera

I am not a newest gear collector. I had a Nikon D 200 converted to IR. Use the 18-200 mm lens mainly. Bought a D300 to replace it. Same batteries, cards, chargers, buttons, knobs, lay out etc. I was happy. I had a system that worked for me. Very interchangeable.

But I am having focus issues with the IR so it’s going back to see if issues can be fixed.

Presuming it can’t, an option is a live view camera or mirrorless.

As this is hobby for me, can folks suggest used or n ew Nikon options that might be considered. I presume batteries and cards and layouts of knobs and buttons will have to change but the less the better. Not wanting to spend mote than 500 if possible - less wold be better

Thanks

In your situation I would look for a second hand D7200. For image quality this camera is only marginally behind even the best of full frame cameras.

The direct replacement for the D200 and D300 is the D500 but you won't get one for $500. Are you getting the camera converted to IR? A D7000, D7100, or D7200 is the way to go.

If you're not happy with how the Nikon system is working out, You may have to look into another brand. I've been perfectly happy with my refurbished Canon M6 and 2 lenses, though I'm hoping to get a few more lenses the 50mm & 100mm have been ideal for the moment.

I shoot IR as well. You can purchase a pre-converted new or used camera from most IR/UV Conversion services, https://lifepixel.com/ or https://kolarivision.com/

I agree with what some of the others are saying, the Nikon D500 (Pro DX) is the direct replacement for your camera but it is essentially a current model and costs a lot. You might look for a used D7000, D7100, D7200, all DX APS-C Cameras.

I just looked Life-Pixel actually is selling used Nikon IR Pre-Converted D100, D200, D300, D300S cameras for $130 to $330 -ish. https://www.lifepixel.com/product-category/converted-cameras/nikon-converted-cameras
Probably cheaper than a repair on your current camera. I'm sure they refurbed the used ones. Ask!

The D7xxx series is very good, and you can find them at good prices. Ideally, a D7200 would be a good choice. Get a shutter count before you buy.

If you where happy with the Nikon D200, then look at the Nikon D610. You can buy it used for about $600, the IR conversion is very similar to the D200, the focusing will work with most IR conversions, and will work better than most in extremely low light. Also, you can use the crop part of the sensor to get files similar to what you were getting, or you can use the full frame sensor to get some very detailed files.

I don't own the D610, but I know people who continue to use it, and have no interest in the newest greatest whatever that comes out every week.

I would say that your new camera should be a D7200.

Everybody's forgotten Nikons full frame masterpiece the D700

Here's one on ebay that's still in your price range:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Nikon-D700-MINT-2504-Shutter-Count-12-1-MP-DSLR-AF-Camera/183984881091?epid=1003645913&hash=item2ad65a7dc3:g:txMAAOSwYVpdmgPl

There's heaps on ebay cheaper but this one has
less than 3,000 actuations.
The D700 has a kevlar shutter that is pessimistically
rated to 150,000 actuations.

If you liked your D300, a D700 will put
you in a transcendent state in which there is neither suffering,
desire, nor sense of self, and you will be released from the effects
of karma and the cycle of death and rebirth. :-)

Read the reviews, they are true, I know, I've been driving
a D700 for 7 years, and I'm far from outgrowing it.
Start with a 50mm f1.8AF D or F1.4 AF D lens.
Either of these lenses are an investment.

The sample image below is a shot of a Fujifilm
I took recently with my Nikon D700.

Do the "double download" and check the I.Q.

Check into the SONY R1 with Sony lens. Best bang for the buck. Full Frame.
