Nikon D5 and D500 RAW problem

Recently bought a D5 and D500. Set it to RAW + JPG (second card slot) just like I did on my D850. On the first use of the D5 and D500, all my photos on the cards came out to be JPG when I uploaded to the iMac. That’s unlike the D850 which correctly gives NEF and JPG files separately. The small LCD screen on the D5 (Under the main screen) shows both cards as JPG despite the setting being correct. This is quite weird. I’ve referred this to Nikon and they’re doing their research now to figure this. Anyone with similar issues or insights into what’s going on and what to do? By the way, what’s the downside of only shooting JPG other than post processing ?

There are 2 steps. In addition to telling these cameras which card slot to use for each, under "Image Quality" you have to tell it to shoot both Raw and JPG.

Sorry Bill. I owe you an apology. I had not set RAW and JPG in Image Quality. Your guidance has fixed the issue. Thank you. That why I love this forum !

Glad I read this today. I had set my D7200 for raw and jpg, but wasn't aware that I had to set image quality for both. Lesson learned, thanks to the folks on UHH.

I have to admit that I have made the same mistake you made: I forgot to set both the RAW and Jpeg image type. And you may have to set the desired image size too.

I always preach--check your settings before each shoot. I just have to remember to follow my own advice!

I hope the OP is not following this thread. He won't feel special any more.
