Thanks for the tip. A Lavalier won't cut it for what I want. Ideally, I'd use a couple of Shure wireless SM 58s
https://www.shure.com/en-US/products/wireless-systems/slx_wireless/slx24_sm58_wireless_set
run thru a small mixer, then pull a mic level mixed feed off the board (1/4" stereo phone out, turn around to 3.5mm stereo Plug) & from there to camera.Sound about right?

Shure SM57/58/59s have been classics for a long time - solid mics at a reasonable price.

I am considering buying an external (hot shoe mount) Stereo mic for my D5300. So for I have found the following 2 Mic's that seem worthwhile:
Movo VXR300 HD PRO
Movo VXR280 Condenser Stereo Video Microphone w/90-120° Directional Mic Capsules
Any comments on these two, or other suggestions.
Thanks

check out the RODE lineup. I am thinking of getting the VIDEOMIC PRO+ ($299) for my D500. I have the videomic pro ($230) for my D3300. RODE.com .

They are pretty much the 'Gold Standard' for mic's.

If you read some of the negative reviews on Amazon, it seems you are better off with your Camera mic and tweaking the sound in the editor, especially for recording concerts.

Otherwise I'd buy a better mic and/or stand alone recorder used on ebay from a top rated seller, for half of what it costs new. If it is represented as in perfect working condition, and is not, ebay/paypal will refund your money and pay the return postage.

Thanks for the tips. I'm looking for a 'Run-N-Gun' setup. The only post ware I have is the Cyberlink Suite that came with my laptop, which I rarely use. Onboard mic specs are not included in Nikon user manual; need to dig deeper. Separate audio recorder might be nice, but you'd be better off with a couple of wireless SM58's to a mixer out to the camera via turnarounds. However, most situations won't afford pre show set-up; hence the 'Run-N-Gun; mode.

I use Adobe Audition for audio editing. It used to be called Cool Edit Pro and was free. It is basically the same product. Cool Edit Pro can still be downloaded for free or purchased for $10 on ebay. It has many features such as equalizers, echo, delay, condensers, limiters, normalizers, noise reducers, volume faders, stereo placement, etc. Can also cut and paste pieces of audio to cover up mic hits, etc. I have improved some camera audio with it when my stand alone recorder failed. Audio post processing is like post processing a pic in Photoshop. Looking at many negative camera mic reviews on Amazon, the most frequent negative comment is that it was no better than the built in camera mic. To get the best audio for video you need a good mic and a good recorder. One advantage besides quality of the stand alone recorders is you have two separate audio streams, so if the recorder fails, you can use the camera audio as a backup. Also if you have a zoom lens on the camera you won't pick up the noise of the zoom lens hunting for focus. Or in some cases you may want to blend both audio streams.
