I caught this just after lift off from it's perch. The focus seems easier to lock on as the motion perpendicular to the lens is less at this point. These things move fast and present a challenge to capture.
This was shot using a Nikon D800E with a Tamron 150-600 SP lens at f/8, ISO-100, 1/640 sec.
I preset the camera and waited. When the bird lifted it's wings I pressed the shutter (on continuous) and got off five frames. This was the one and the next as it flew right over me.
These are my fourth time out using this new lens. Longer reach opens up a whole new world. I have read that an extender on this lens doesn't improve the finished image much. I may test it for myself in the future.

Great shots!! I have the older G1 model of that lens and love it!
Love them both, especially the first one.
Have had that lens a couple of years and love it.
Just bought Sigma 2.8 120-300. Shot some night horse racing last weekend. Going to take some
getting used to. Think Nikon will have this same lens out shortly. Hope so.
Headed to Southern Rockies today to shoot aspens and Lincoln County Cowboy Symposium. Great music, horses, etc., and great weather at 7,000 feet.
One of my best weekends of every year.
