Thanks Ronsh. I am working on it. Trying to get used to my new lens 200-500mm f/5.6.

Tom: These shots are the best you have taken. You have not over saturated, they are sharp and cropped nicely. Keep up the good work. These should be a sample of your work to come. Everything outside should look like these. No excuses sir. Good stuff here.

You have taken me this far. Your comments and advise have really hit home with me. You have been a wonderful mentor for me. I appreciate everything you have taught me so much. I am working on it. I have also taken your advise on the night shots. If I do get out it would only be for a quarter or so. I met the principle at this game, he saw my hat, shirt, and badge and came up to me. We had quite a long talk, which I really enjoyed but had to finally tell him I should go shoot some photos. I don't remember what the lighting is like when fall back comes. That one hour could be ok. I was going to go shoot a game this afternoon but rain is in the forecast from about noon till tonight so probably not going to happen. Well grand babies are telling me it is lunch time. Keep up the wonderful work. Thanks again.

My pleasure sir. Keep up the good work. From these examples it just goes to show you and me what you are capable of producing.

"...I am trying hard..." perseverance, practice and patience are the cornerstones of attainment... a.k.a. there is virtually no substitute for real-time hands on experience... albeit sadly there are those who mistakenly believe that photographic excellence is a consumer product... Stay the course and you will arrive...

Here is a query Tom on this recent success with the AF 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR.... for these images what AF point selection did you deploy on your D810? Single Point; Group AF or a cluster of 9 points... Whatever you used it appears to be highly effective (or maybe it's more likely your stellar technique!)

Reason I ask is I'm totally lame at shooting sports... rarely do it and have not had much success with the 200-500mm on the soccer pitch (low lock on rate, even though the image shows the single AF point on the player)... Thinking the fact that with soccer plays moves chaotically from one end of the pitch to the other... I find it extremely difficult to tract play with the 200-500mm... Beside a soccer pitch is somewhat larger (I shoot FIFA regulation fields 120 yards long and 80 yards wide) as apposed to "American" football (100 yards long and 53 yards wide). Or possibly because play in American football starts from a "Static" line of scrimmage as apposed to soccer where once the whistle blows play can move at an exponential pace to either end or side of the field limited only by "Off Side" rules... Or maybe I should just stay home and shoot in my studio... lol

Anyway, you seemed to have tamed that 200-500mm beast... Good Show!

Thanks!

Tom- like Thomas, I’d like to know what AF Point selection you used as well as metering ( matrix ? Single point? ) and your settings . Perfect results. Thanks. Paul

First let me say. I went back to look at your old post had not done that with yours before. WOW, you are really good at what you do. Some really exceptional shots, I really enjoyed. I can still see the one photo though, the start of cross country and like I had posted the intensity in the girl's faces was priceless. You caught it. Ok onward. I use single point most of the time. I need to use and practice with some of the others and see if they will work for me. I don't know if this lens or me but at this game I dumped a ton of photos because they were out of focus. Well actually that and were focused on something other than what I wanted. Also after AF/BB locked on the remaining shots were out of focus also. You had said whatever it was highly effective or MY stellar technique. Well it was definitely MY STELLAR TECHNIQUE!! LOL LOL . I can tell you, you just need to practice with this lens. Its a bear to handle and I have found out I need to really be a lot further back from the action than all my other lenses. But it will take exceptional photos, you just have to practice, practice, practice. You definitely have the talent. Soccer is a really tough sport for me to shoot. Following the ball and action is a real challenge. And like you said at first, photo excellence as some think that a consumer product makes you a good/great photographer. Not close, you make you that. You can give a crap camera/lens to a real photographer and he/she will take amazing photos with it. Sorry I rambled so long. Thanks Thomas

AF 5 point, single point 1/1000, ISO 800, f/5.6. some were at ISO 800, f.6.3, 1/2000. Thanks

Single point is tough for me, I have trouble keeping that little red square on the subject. I go to Group P + 9 points on Nikon
