A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

This is from the Connecticut Constitution: Connecticut: Every citizen has a right to bear arms in defense of himself and the state (1818).

If you had a chance to reword the Second Ammendment , what would it say?

It would say"Every citizen has the right to be able to protect themselves if need be,and this right will not be infringed."

I like the way the Connecticut law is written. It allows for sensible control of guns and ammunition and prevents the state from outlawing all guns. Banning military style guns and large magazines, as well as armor piercing bullets, is a sensible way to limit gun violence without taking away everyone's guns.

"The people shall have the unabridged right to keep and bear arms and to protect themselves from all enemies, both foreign and domestic."

We have far more domestic enemies currently beyond the commn criminal.

Could not been said better - it was the people in power who banned guns in the most horrific genocides known to man - it need not EVER happen here.

What "common enemies" do we have that need killing? Enlighten me.

I like some of your responses...As for "People" and "Citizen", I think it needs to be more defined. As of this moment you do not need to be a citizen in this country to own a firearm. You only need to be a legal resident. That is how it is here in Ct. to get a pistol permit. To get a long gun you need a criminal background check. My grandmother came here from Poland aroung 1900. She never got her US Citizenhip.Using the term "People" also needs some help in terminology. We need a word, that without a doubt means the regular every day John or Jane Doe and not the Government.

When it comes to sensible gun control... Where does the Government draw the line. We have an assault weapons ban in Ct. It is feel good legislation. A bunch of politicians got together in a room to look at a bunch of guns and said, I don't like this or I don't like that. They were banning things and didn't even know what they were. Flash hiders were a great example of that. You could have a muzzle brake but not a flash hider. Most people don't even know what a flash hider is meant to do. Gun control is people control. If someone was breaking into my home, I would not reach for my 22 bolt action. It would be my evil AR15 and a 30 round mag.

Being prepared to protect yourself and others in a time of need does not necessarily mean killing.
The rattle of the slide on a shotgun is unmistakable and feared my all with any knowledge of guns.

Being necessary for a free state...i.e...that is from the government. We won't end up being Syria.

Two very good examples of Gun Ban is:
#1 Mexico - only the criminal has more than a "simple" shot gun to hunt with - the criminals have all they want - not just from USA but left over from all the wars in Latina America as well as smuggled in from other countries in Europe & Asia.

#2 Australia is the most recent country to ban gun - violent crime has "JUMPED" because the criminals know the honest people have turned in their guns.

Be informed not misled.

That Sha Shunk sound is unmistakable. It is one of the sounds that strikes fear in the hearts of mortal men. If only they could fit it into the game of Rock, Paper, Scissors.

I like the Connecticut Constitution. I don't need an assault rifle with a 30 round mag. My Colt 1911 with three 7 round mags would do very well.

Shotgun for home defense. AR15 will go through walls so if you live near other people that may not be the wisest firearm choice - but a damn sexy one at that.

Ol' Frank... I like the 1911 too. I don't have a Colt in that model but i do have three Custom Kimber's. My favorite is my Grand Raptor.

Back to the subject of the Second Ammendment, here is ann atricle written in 1788 on the definition of "Militia".
