Some of the neighborhood farmers are glad the typhoon wasn't any worse than it was. The prediction was bad but all we got was a lot of rain for two days. The rivers almost crested but the banks held. A flood would have devastated the rice that is a week or two away from harvest.
They are getting ready to drink makgeolli or sometimes spelled makkoli. An alcoholic beverage made with rice. It's not really a wine but that's what most people classify it as. It has a sediment in it that needs to be mixed if it sits for a few hours. The man on the left is gently turning the bottle up and down a few times to mix the pulp. He will pour it in the bowls there in front of them and they will sip it at first then drink down the last half of the bowl then one of the other guys will do the some with the next bottle. They will enjoy the drink and conversation and nice weather until the mosquitoes get too bad and they will call it a night.
An interesting shot, and everyone's waiting for that bottle to be opened.

Thanks Voss, The woman won't drink with the men, it is her job to see that they have plenty to drink. ;-)

Thanks for looking Truckster, I may have written too much but when I'm not familiar with a custom I like to know about it. The world doesn't get many photos from Mae Won Li, I thought I'd try to explain the place. :-)
Very nice, the backstory helped a lot!

Thanks AZNikon. Usually a picture is worth a thousand words but in our international forum what is common to one person may not be to another. I read one time that my backyard is the other side of the world to people on the other side of the world. :-)
It's not uncommon to spike the mokkoli with soju to give it a little more kick. At first, it looked like green soju bottles, but, as I remember, soju came in green glass bottles, not plastic. Brings back memories.
Thanks for looking, SalvageDiver, I hope they are good memories. ;-) Yup this stuff is straight up makkoli and it is the cheap stuff too; the best kind for this environment. :D
