Help to import CR3 (Canon Raw) onto MacBook Pro?

Does anyone have advice on a straight forward way to import CR3 Raw files onto a MacBook Pro? I recently started shooting in CR3 which is like a Raw Lite from what I can derive, and also JPEG, and when I plug my SD card into my reader for my Mac, it only brings in the JPEG's, though it "acknowledges" there are two types of the same photo on the thumbnail, I just can't get to the RAW one. I ended up pulling them into Lightroom, then somehow they populated in my "finder" and then I could pull them into iPhoto, but is there an easier way?

This chart says Lightroom CC will handle the CR3 files from most of the Canon cameras. https://helpx.adobe.com/camera-raw/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html

That leads to the question of how you are opening them. Are you adding/importing to Lightroom CC? Are you copying them from card to computer? Are you trying to look at them only with Finder?

At first I tried to just import them through iPhoto, which didn't work. Then I pulled them into LRCC, but it says X amount weren't imported because they were damaged, which is really confusing... so technically I can pull them from sd card to finder to LRCC to iPhoto to sort them then back to LR or PS to edit, but that seems like I have to be doing something wrong?

Yes, you should be using the "+" add button in Lightroom, directing it to the SD card and they will import into Lightroom. They should temporarily reside on your computer until transferred to the Adobe cloud servers.

If they are damaged, it might be the card or the computer reader. Maybe you can try whatever software that came with the camera to see if they are damaged. Maybe you need a new card.

"..pull them from sd card to finder to LRCC to iPhoto to sort them then back to LR"

I'm not sure how that can work. I'm unsure that iPhoto works in a Lightroom CC environment. Isn't a one or the other choice?

I had a similar problem and I found that I could change the cr3 through Adobe DNG converter. I load the files and change the name of the first one to xxxxx.cr2 and then hit start. Give it a try

Apple has app called Image Capture. The app will import your photos from your SD card and put them into any folder that you choose. You can then bring them into the library of your photo editor.

I import direct into Apple Photos. Works fine.

Really? Raw photos? When I do that, I see my photo with two boxes in the top right corner, the top box says J, and you can tell there’s a box behind it, letting me know there are two versions of my photo, but I can’t get to it 😏

I'd call Cannon (800) 652-2666.

This would likely be super easy on a windows machine using file explorer.

Did Canon help if not it could be an Apple update. This time call Apple (800) 275-2273.

I spent this morning with them for my new 27" and found a defective keyboard. Went to the store and got it replaced.

Somehow you have to have something that interprets the RAW file. It might be an updated Apple photos app, an additional codec for the iOS or some sort of current app from Adobe or one of their competitors. RAW files can't be simply viewed.

There is a basic problem here that some of the above answers are missing entirely or at least partially.

Finder on a Mac (or the Windows FileExplorer - new name for Windows Explorer) will copy any file from your SD card to your computer to the folder of your choice.

From there you can "import" them to the catalog system of your choice, most of which are a part of a suite that also included post-processing.

LightRoom is, obviously, the dominant one. Apple Photos on the Mac (used to be called iPhoto) is another. Some of them keep up with the manufacturers better than others. Every time they change the identify of the camera in the EXIF there are potentially some problems with raw files.

There are many apps including ImageCapture (specific to Mac) which offer to import directly from either camera or card, for you. Many people find that easier or at least a convenience. It works until something like this comes up.

You can PM me for specifics for the Mac if you wish. One of the issues is learning to "drill down" to the image files on the SD card. Another, for the Mac is that it will try to open Photos or some other program automatically when it senses that you inserted or attached a card or a camera. If it does then you have to close that program so that you can use Finder.
