What does "L" mean ???

A new problem again today...... when I go to change the SS or F-stop setting on my Canon 77D and turn either the SS wheel or the Aperture wheel I get an L in the display..... whether M,A,T, or P functions. I was shooting primarily Manual and it defaulted to 80ss and 5.6 F-stop, so I was able to get decent enough shots, but it would not let me change. I thought it might have meant Lens, and that I had a problem with that lens. Later I tried other lenses, but the same thing happened. What's up??

It looks like the issue is identified. Your manual is another great resource, particularly the pages like pg 34 for the EOS 77D that show the various display screens of the camera.

How come I am having all these stupid problems lately? (leaving myself open for a cheap shot).

If we look at it in a positive light, you're pushing beyond the basics with a relatively complex piece of technology. The lock button is not obvious, particularly if you've never had a body with this feature. Once learned, hopefully always understood.

Did you forget to leave out the beer and pretzels for Murphy? He self identifies as a Bavarian during October in honor of Oktoberfest.

You are surprisingly gracious for a dumb mistake. Actually, I think the Lock switch falls into the category of supercilious frills. Unusable features that only complicate the situation. I am embarrassed in hindsight, and I guess I should have checked the manual, but I got scared that my new camera was broken in some mysterious way and I needed to solve it quick. It may amaze you, but the feedback I get when I post something is quicker and more to the point than poking thru the manual.

Actually the way some people hold a camera their nose can push on the back panel controls. For them that lock has usefulness.

On some of my Nikons "L" means I have something locked, Aperture, Shutter speed etc.

The faster feedback doesn’t surprise me. Manuals, for the most part, are NOT user friendly.

The manual is a very important tool. When I purchase a new camera I always leave the manual out on my nightstand. I recently purchased the canon eos r and did the same. However it somehow disappeared and now I’m looking on line each time I need to address a problem or want to make a change. A real pain in the ass.
