When I see image posted I only glance at them unless there is a background information on them as it gives a context and inform.

The fallacy that a picture is worth a thousand word is obvious.

Your view favors photojournalism. On the other side lies the view that a photograph should speak for itself.

The greatest images are those that move you to buy the same type of camera.

I don't know if it's a fallacy, some pictures can stand on their own, but I agree that background information about the subject can help to understand and appreciate.

Ah mon chéri, mais c'est vrai. Une image vaut mieux que mille mots.

I look for and appreciate the photo (or not). I enjoy background text if it’s necessary to understand the photo, but generally it isn’t, for me at least.

If I need words to draw your eye to the important parts of the image, I should take up writing instead of photography.

But if you like doing multimedia, you go right ahead. Multimedia is also an art form.

Not trying to be a smartass, but do you feel the same way about paintings in a museum?

OK, Linda; now we know what you've been doing in "retirement" - studying French!😊

Good point. Similar to the topics brought up in the Art Appreciation and Film courses I taught. My resolution, and one most who are familiar with the question hold: First, let your senses and mind absorb the image. Then respond (emote, judge, question....). If you seek or come across other information, written or spoken, it likely will increase you knowledge of and appreciation for the art, photo, movie. That additional information is not essential for enjoyment.

The OP's perspective is very narrow, but useful to him. Many ways to respond to a photo.
