Spirit Bear

The Spirit Bear (or Kermode bear) results from a double recessive gene in the DNA of about 50% of the black bears in the Great Bear Rainforest of northern British Columbia. The Git Ga'at legend is that the Creator (Raven) made every tenth bear white to remind the people of the hardships when the world was white (referring to the ice age).

Beautiful animal and photo. I was there in 2010 and what an experience. Assume you were on Gribbell Island and on Riordan Creek as well. The Git Ga'at had set up a viewing platform. Looks like you had rain too. We spent three hours under the blue-tarp awning and watched two of them come and go as they fished. Finally one of them caught one.

You asked for critique. At first I thought there might be a focus issue but on Download and especially Double Download the bear really is in focus. It's just that he's wet. The background is fuzzy but you may have blurred that on purpose. Not sure what the pink item is, but maybe you could remove in PP. I know it's dark and other-worldly in there and you captured that well.

If you look at the bears mouth there is pink on it, If you look closely the pink look like the remains of a fish it has just fed from...

John, Yes, the bear was wet and so were we. I was there for six days and got hundreds of pictures of four different Spirit bears and several black bears. The fishing was very good and we saw many bears catch spawning pink salmon. The pink thing is a piece of a pink salmon, the creek was strewn with uneaten bits of fish. I think I will remove it if I decide to print this image.

Well, the photo is certainly worth printing and printing large. Too bad you can't tell it's a salmon because salmon are a big part of the story of those bears and the rainforest itself. I noticed you shoot with the E-M1, II. I just recently upgraded to that from the M10, III. So far I really enjoy using it and the M10 got me used to the Olympus menu system. So the change has been pretty easy. I see you also have a 100-400mm lens and I assume that's a Panasonic. How do you like it? Olympus is supposed to come out with one soon, but the photos look like it will be $$$$$$$$. Anyway, I hope you post more photos of those bears. There are very few of us who have seen them in person and I feel quite privileged to be among the few.

John, I will post more pictures of the bears. Not sure I will post them in the critique section though. They might get tiresome here and there may be a section where more people will see them. Too bad we don't have a wildlife section. Maybe admin can talk Steve Perry in to starting one. I just traded in one of my E-M1MkIIs for a M1X, so I'm back to climbing the learning curve again.

Hi MC, I'll be interested in you're experience with the M1X. I know a guide who loves the M1X. Have you loaded Firmware Version 3.0 in your other M1? I posted my Spirit Bear photos "Where Black Bears Are White" in the Photo Gallery section. I asked "Linda from Maine" about a Wildlife Section because it certainly seems to be missing. Apparently, someone has to volunteer to head it up and be willing to manage it. I guess all the sections have guidelines and policies (e.g. would a zoo animal be wildlife and stuff like that). I guess no one has come forward. She said a lot of those interested in wildlife just post in the Photo Gallery and have become friends there. Of course, that gives wider distribution so it's not all bad. Anyway I'll be watching for your posts.
