The FIRST THING I do after buying an old camera on eBay is to sniff it !.....AHHHHh 1949....a good year.
Just like old wines.....an acquired taste. I crave the Earthen-smell of old buildings and bridges and mold ,moss, and moisture, old timber and rusted iron.......I'm alive most when in this state and glad to still be here and wondering what old thing will pop-up next.

Smell is certainly one of the more evocative senses. Your description sounds nicer than a mingling of stale food and nicotine. The camera is doing much better though and at some point it will be rare when I catch a tiny whiff of the original. It spent the night in a box with something I ordered... so now it's smelling like lavender and vanilla. I'd like that to fade a bit as well, and it should. The deodorizer is supposed to pull out odors and has a fragrance of its own. I read the latter part doesn't last for too long. Fingers crossed.

My family got super pissed when I gave my friend VADA and her husband The Police 38 an uncle carried as a beat cop in New York for 30 years and never used. And the field gray 45 that my Uncle Thomas carried in Europe while in Patton's 3Rd Army Artillery. Three times he used it against the German troops and was wounded twice. My father had it when he died and I just did not need a side arm in my house.

So now there is a manly man who loves target practice, and he tells his buddies all about that Colt 45 military hand gun from WW II.

I actually did NRA while my father a doctor and Colonial in the Army. He was one of the trouble makers who defied Nikon's order to show proficiency with side arms for doctors during the Viet Nam Era. He was first on the firing range, emptied the clip into the sand in front of him along with the rest of his officers. Inherently, as a kid he hunted in rural Waterbury Connecticut for dear and such during the depression era. I'm sure he could get a high score on the target range but there was that Hippocratic oath thing.

Great guy Joe Summa.

"First do no harm," applies to targets as well as people? Curiouser and curioser. Not even going to ask who at Nikon wanted doctors to be proficient with sidearms, or why.

All of the products in the attached image are still available. The baking soda in a plastic bag with the offending item, in my experience, it the best and safest treatment. Isopropyl alcohol is best if the odor is caused by bacteria. CLR makes a product called Mold Control, however, I find that strong odors caused by mold and mildew are almost impossible to eliminate even after striping camera coverings and replacing them with new adhesive and material.

Do not spray any of these chemicals directly on cameras or lenses, apply the carefully with swabs or lintless cloth.

The "Stink Bomb" product works well on camera bags and cases.

Possibly an accidental post on an adjacent string? Not sure... I've certainly messed up on Facebook a few times and got my wires crossed. :-P

I've heard of Nature's Miracle products for pet urine... didn't realize they had special products for skunks. We don't see or smell skunks around here very often ... but once in a blue moon, yes. I appreciate all the tips for odor removal (and thank you for taking the time to share the images). :-) I might not need to bring in the heavy artillery with this camera but who knows what could come up in the future? Good to know what's out there.

I've cleaned the camera with Windex and a couple of spots with Dawn, aired it out and as of yesterday, it's spending some time inside a box with a product I ordered from Amazon. It seems to be working. The camera currently smells of lavender and vanilla, but I suspect that will fade after a few days away from close proximity and the rest of the funk will go with it. :-P Here's a link for what I'm using. A person doesn't have to go with the fragrance I ordered... they offered a wild berry scent. Another... "clean meadows." ;-) Those fragrances will be temporary, according to some of the reviews I'd looked at.

Sorry for the blue block... I used Grab and there was another thing it picked up on. Anyway... you can see what the product looks like.
