Help! Can pictures be recovered from a SD card formated by mistake?

Dumb. Dumb. We are on a trip out West (writing this from Jackson, WY), have already taken lots of pictures on my Nikon D5500 and getting close to filling it. While fiddling around in the Menu today, I formatted the SD card by mistake. This ranks right up there with getting 39, then 40, then 41 shots on a 36-exposure roll of Kodachrome years ago before discovering that the leader did not engage the take-up reel. Bah!
If I don't touch the card and take it out of the camera now, are my images recoverable?
By the way, it's a PNY 16gb, class 10, if that helps. Ken

Formatting a memory card does not really erase the data on it and they still exist in the data area. If the data area is not overwritten by new content, you can successfully unformat the SD card
Select the Formatted Memory Card. Connect your formatted SD memory card to the computer, select the SD card and click "Start" button to start scanning.
Scanning your Formatted Memory Card. ...
Preview and Recover Data from SD Card.

Balboa, after reading your reply again, and after checking some things online, are you saying that I do not need any specific "recovery software"? That I can simply connect my card reader to the computer and hit 'start'? I don't want to touch that card until I'm confident that what I try will work. Thanks, KJN

You can use a free app called Recuva.
Or some SD cards manufacturers have their own app for this.

Store that card without using it anymore until you return, and continue enjoying your trip

I must ask, do other peoples' cameras "ask" with a final "OK" before allowing you to delete files like a computer? My Pentax cameras all make it a bit hard to accidentally delete your pictures or reformat a card. What of Nikon, Canon, Sony, etc. I'm sure they do, do they?

Yes, my computer asked for final OK, but I mis-read it and clicked the wrong choice. Like I said, dumb. KJN

Don't use the card until you've recovered the data on it, because if you do use it you'll overwrite data and then it will be lost forever.

It depends on the type of format. Was it a low level format?

Used Recuva to retrieve a lot of data off an XQD card, including images taken before several formattings, but not everything that's ever been captured on this card.
