Does anyone remove their camera battery when not in use for awhile? Concerned about possible battery leakage or am I just paranoid?

Six months planned long-term storage (or more), remove the battery and store separately. Not using today or maybe even the next few weeks, no worry about leaving the battery in the body. In the camera, it will drain down, some models faster than others. That means you'll need to recharge before using, not that you're causing a problem.

What does your user’s manual recommend for when you’re not using the camera for awhile? (The procedure could vary, depending upon the camera and battery type.)

I leave them in, keeps the clock current.
Every month, if not used, I check the charge status.

Not planning on six months, but if I were, I'd remove the batteries if unattended for more than two or three months.

I only take the batteries out to charge them. I don't think I ever let a camera sit for six months, but after a few months the charge on the in camera lithiums and the Eneloops in the grips is still very high.

Very much agree. Will add, you should occasionally charge batteries sitting on the shelf as they will slowly loose charge and it's not a good idea to let them fully discharge.

"...a while." ?

Unless a camera is going into storage, I leave the batteries in, and I leave the cameras where I can get to them quickly. I've never had a problem with a camera battery, aside from AA or AAA, doing any harm to photo gear. Even the AA only left a little "schmutz" on the contacts. Leaving the battery in the camera will continuously drain it, so that's something to keep in mind. All manufacturers recommend removing the battery for storage. Nikon recommends removing it if the camera is going to be stored "for an extended period," whatever that means.

I always remove and AA or AAA batteries. Otherwise I have NEVER had leakage. I also make sure my battery is fully charged the day BEFORE I am going to use the camera.

Good indication that photography has lost significant importance on one’s priority list or has move other things up.
