A couple of weeks ago, me my wife and daughter her husband and my grandson traveled to the old town of Knaresborough. It was a heritage weekend where many attractions in our area (museums/Castles/gardens etc) are open to the public free of charge. The only trouble with these weekends is that people turn out in droves, and so it's hard to get clear photos! The Castle is in ruins, being dismantled by Oliver Cromwell after the English civil war to deter any royalist troops garrisoning it again.
This was take early morning in the the old Market place

This was a steep climb up/down,these stairwells were designed so a defender with a sword could keep attackers at bay by being able to wield his sword, whilst the assailant would not be able to reach him.

this is the shirt Sir Henry Slingsby wore at his beheading (1658) on tower hill in London. the shirt is bloodstained at the bottom and is ripped at the top so they could remove it from his body. this was displayed in the Castle Museum.

Very interesting! Thanks for bringing it to us.
For those of us on the other side of the pond, this is certainly very interesting. Thank you for sharing with us...
Lovely photographs Doddy, you are right though people do get in the way sometimes. I have stood around for ages waiting for people to move, very often other photographers!
Interesting photos and history. The garderobe is interesting. It would be awful to be the one sent to slither through the toilet when trying to break in. Lords dictated to their secretaries while sitting on the toilet.
Interesting pictorial tour.

Very Interesting and great photos of your trip too!
However, question for photo #2. My wife and a small group ventured to Rome and surrounding areas. We visited many castles in decay and the Coliseum. Many had small "square chunks" in the buildings. I inquired what they were. I was told if a building was left abandon for a period of years, it was subject to persons able to remove the "outside" of the building of its stone, marble, granite, and iron etc. To your knowledge, is this the case of the castle in photo #2?
Still, nice set and as noted, history too!
Thanks
