People in landscape photos can certainly help with scale and interest, but they aren't always available or willing to pose. I thought of carrying a mannequin around with me, but was afraid it would scare my 12-pound dog

Hah! Had to laugh at the visual of you with a mannequin and Trixie running away from it!

There are a lot of historical buildings around here, both preserved and in ruins. I've often thought of populating one or more with period Ghosts. The simplest idea, a translucent figure in the window of an abandoned hotel. Execution is not a problem, either in camera or with software. Cast, costumes and logistics more so. I would not regard this as either Landscape of Architecture, but something more in the fantasy realm.

On the other hand, she's been traumatized by llamas and bighorn sheep, so maybe she'd take the opportunity to shake the stuffing out of the fake human

Are you talking about using actors in period dress? Isn't there more impact in showing those dwellings without people - let us imagine their stories?

I can go with both sides here.
If the building is a complete ruin, no people.
If it is just old and a little rundown but still functional then people can add to the image. Esp if dressed to match - and a farmer in front of a barn or old country store wearing Bib Overalls with a wide brimmed hat could be timeless for most people since they don't know how far back bib overalls go. They are mentioned in writing back to the late 1700s and Levi's modern design is from the 1890s, Levi's 501 jeans go back to 1873. Add a flannel or wool shirt and a wide brimmed hat without any kind of logo and 99.9% of people will not notice anything "wrong". Just tell the person to hide the wrist watch or glasses and don't wear their John Deer hat or super bowl belt buckle.
I can go with both sides here. br If the building ... (show quote)

And don
't forget to keep the shoes in period. Other in animate objects could also serve the purpose such as a car or truck, farm gear, water or gas pump, etc. It could be quite small if properly placed in the composition.

Actors or someone willing to put on a period costume yes. For landscape photos anyone could be standing in the foreground admiring the scene.

What wrecks the photo I mentioned earlier of the 1852 grocery store is a damned neon "open" sign in one of the windows. Yeah, Photoshop could take care of it but it just ain't the same.

A difficult decision: rip that offending sign right out of the window...or use PS and stay out of jail

Since this seems to follow my idea - I would recruit either actor friends from the local theater group, or other friends. Advantage to the actors / actresses - some rather good period sufficient costume and "Attitude!" I don't post photos on others threads, but I have a few recent play photos that tell that story.
