Nikon AF-S VS. AF-P
I currently have a Nikon D5300; Lenses are a 35mm 1:18 & a 55 - 200mm AF-S DX VR. I'm in the market for a 18 - 55mm DX VR lens. There are both AF-S & AF-P versions available. I would like some pro/con & comparison remarks from shooters who have used both types of AF systems. I'll be shopping @ "Roberts" or "KEH" where they probably have both in "mint" condition.
One 'con' of the AF-P version is that you may need to download and install a firmware update to your D5300 to enable compatibility. Otherwise, pick the one that is the best price for your budget, including considerations of shipping and taxes and return options.
I think the AF-P is one way for Nikon to save some bucks. You don't see them on high end lenses.
Thanks for the info. I'll do some research on compatibility. Roberts & KEH both offer 180 day warranty, that's where I'll be shopping.

Avoid mixing warranty with return. Either the lens works on your camera or not. If you owned a D5100, for example, there would be nothing you can do to enable an AF-P lens on that model DSLR. Rather, you'd have a 2-week window from KEH to request a Return Authorization and prepaid shipping label. I'm more familiar with KEH; I've only bought from Roberts in person in Indy. After that no-questions-asked return window closes, the warranty support is something else and it wouldn't be compatibility.
I hear you. Nikon praises the upgrade, but 'newer isn't always better. Sorry about the duplicate replies; I was confused over which 'Reply' button to use. First time poster 'Blues'.
I appreciate the 'heads up'. I'll definitely do my homework before I buy.

The <quote reply> button is the way to respond to a specific post, when desired.

Definitely do your own research.
Hey DaveO,
Thanks for the link. I'm headed there now.

Just a suggestion, drop the 18-55 kit lens and investigate and research the Nikon 18-140 3.5--5.6 lens, I have this lens and it has produced excellent images and has the exact same Aperture range as the 18-55 kit lens.

For an 18-55 lens the advantages of AF-P may not be obvious, but for longer glass, the AF-P technology is stunning. The AF-P 70-300 lenses, both the DX and FX versions, focus almost instantly and are super quiet. IMHO, AF-P is a significant improvement.
The AF-p is supposed to be much quieter when focusing, something that can be very important for video.
