If you've been noticing more colorful sunsets lately, you can thank the June eruption of Russian volcano Raikoke, according to the Washington Post.
"You may have noticed sunsets this summer featuring a subtle purple hue, a violet tinge nestled somewhere between the western horizon’s inviting ambers and the delicate royal blue up above. It’s been most prevalent a few minutes after sunset, lasting only a few minutes. But it has helped make already beautiful sunsets even more dynamic and spectacular."

A few years back I was in Venezuela and we stayed a few days in Maracaibo where the oil production is and there is a lot of particulate in the air, the sunsets were stunning, absolutely the best I have ever seen and I lived several years in the Caribbean.
