The Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada, blazing red formations

The Valley of Fire State Park is not far from Las Vegas. The blazing red formations are quite a treat to see either early in the morning or late afternoon when the light is very warm. The reddish-orange really pops in contrast to the surrounding, rather drab, mountains. The second image with the stairs is on the way to the Park.

Please download for proper color and detail.

Thanks, Blackie. The formations in the Park are from another Planet.

Thanks, Jan. There are many formations in the Park that are unworldly.

The vivid colors make "wow" pictures and I love them. But since I have never been there please tell me, was it really that orange and red when you stood there and looked at the scene before you made the exposures? Did you do any color changes in the camera or post processing? Just for comparison it would be interested to see these versions side-by-side with the same pictures but with any color enhancements removed if you did indeed enhance it.

I did cut the saturation by about 17%. The sensor was on a D300, and it wasn't able to "see" the subtle variations in color that the newer, more powerful sensors "see" and record. But, to answer your question, yes the colors in the reddish-orange light of very late afternoon appear pretty much as you see them. I think that is why they call the Park "The Valley of Fire". The image will lose a lot "pop" when printed, since it will no longer be backlit by the computer screen.

Is The Valley of Fire anywhere in the Las Vegas area or where is it in the state? If it is near Vegas, I would like to go there the next time I go. I photographed at Red Rock the last time I was in Vegas about five years ago. We use to go every year or so and are long overdue.

It's about 70 minutes from Vegas. Google it. The stuff you see from the road is okay, but the real treats are about a 40 minute hike. Lemme know when you're going. The hike is without a marked trail from behind the visitor center area towards the hills. Plan on spending 2-3 hours back there hiking in those hills. Do it late afternoon.
