I have a Nikon D750 and have my "Flash Shutter Speed" set to 1/60 sec. (same as all my cameras) so when you use flash the shutter speed automatically sets to 1/60 sec. It's been doing this correctly for the several years I've owned it. I just went to use my flash and the shutter speed in aperture or program mode remains at what the meter indicates not 1/60 but in full auto mode, it does go to 1/60. I'm very familiar with the menu system and I haven't changed any settings that I aware of but I can't figure it out. Has anyone encountered this?

The flash sync speed for your camera can be anything up to 1/200.
I figured it out, the flash was set to "Slow" mode which is used for long exposure with fill flash. I never use that, in those situations I just use manual mode so I didn't think about checking that. It must have gotten changed inadvertently. I've hiked around 50 miles these past couple of weeks with the camera dangling at my side, might have happened then.

The behavior you've described makes
perfect sense. Don't worry about it.
Your flash sync speed is set to 1/60 sec, just change in your settings.
To change the default flash speed setting go to a custom setting for flash and set the speed you want. To fully understand Nikon flash, consider buying Mike Hager’s book on the Nikon flash system, called Nikon creative lighting system. See if he has any videos on using Nikon flash.

Glad you figured that out! It can be maddening to find it when something gets changed accidentally.
I would like to see two things on digital cameras: (1) a menu settings lock. When enabled it would prevent menu settings from being changed. (2) a save/recall state button that would return all settings on the camera to the exact same state.
Hi JD750, Those are good ideas. I'm not sure what all functions can be set in the User 1 and 2 modes, I should probably know that also, I can reset everything to factory defaults but I wasn't quite there yet. I'm not sure why Nikon removed the flash mode from the top LCD like my D300 and D600 to the back screen on the D750 or I probably would have noticed it a lot sooner. When it's on the top LCD it's always displayed and you can see what it's set to with a glance but it doesn't show on the back screen of the D750 unless you go to change it, so it didn't even occur to me until I broke out the manual.
This is why when asked to shoot an event, the day or so before I set up my camera so it is ready to go for that specific event, and I take test shots to convince myself the camera is behaving the way I want. Thanks, everyone for your help and replies.
Make sure you use FP mode ( flash programme) at the highest setting and all will be well. Remember also that the iso will go to 4x your basic setting when you put a flash in the shoe.

Many cameras do have, more or less, the features you describe.
