HE RETOLD THE STORY OF HIS HARROWING ESCAPE FROM THE SINKING SHIP IN HIS BOOK, "SECOND TO LAST TO LEAVE THE USS ARIZONA"
By: Linnea Crowther3 hours ago
Lauren Bruner was a U.S. Navy veteran who was aboard the USS Arizona in Pearl Harbor when it was attacked on December 7, 1941. Having joined the Navy in 1938, Bruner was serving as a fire control man on the ship when Japanese aircraft flew so close to Arizona’s deck as they dropped their bombs that Bruner recalled seeing one pilot’s face so clearly that he could see his grin. Bruner was shot during the attack, and, trapped in a control tower, he nearly missed his chance to escape. He was one of the last few crewmen who escaped before Arizona sank. With his death, only three crew members who were on Arizona that day still remain. Bruner wrote a book about his experiences, “Second to Last to Leave the USS Arizona.”

It's called the greatest generation for a reason. I'll have to read his book.

If folks are ever in the NYC area be sure to take the weekend tour of the Brooklyn Navy Yard where you can see the ways, docks, and drydocks where the AZ and ships like it (e.g. Missouri, North Carolina, etc.) were built and fitted out. The museum is open 7 days a week and there are exhibits about and from the AZ but I believe the tours are only on the weekends. So many photo ops. I saw where the ways were located that these great ships were launched from. They had to attach heavy chains all around each ship as it came down the ways to slow and prevent them from striking the Williamsburgh Bridge. My Dad worked there for awhile and the whole thing was very moving.

The title of this thread are the last words spoken to Congress by General Douglas MacArther upon his retirement. His last command was Korea.
