Super shots, Ron, and I've never heard of anyone being bitten by a mantis. I was told when growing up that if one spit in your eye, you'd go blind.

Lorraine was watering the garden and this guy got a sprinkle so he/she popped out so I was able to get a few shots.
I picked him/her up and let him/her run around on me for a while and then popped him/her back where he/she came from.

I have removed a pair from my backyard to my front yard as they were on one of my Hummingbird feeders. Supposedly they can kill and eat hummingbirds. I did not want to find out if that is true...Nice captures though.

What! In FL??? You have at least 5 species there. I guess you need to look further out in the field, but at least one is very general. However, they can be very hard to spot in tall grass or on bark.

You're right on the eyes - they have an inquisitive look about them.

Sorry, all. I thought I was replying to Steve Blythe's comment on Florida. But, did not realize it would just be added to the last of the list. Don't know the southern fauna, but I'm not sure you can tell the sex of an immature. On the other hand, perhaps this is a wingless species? In any case, a nice set, Ron!

They will bite if handled roughly and held by the back or in a way they can reach your hand. But, the bite is only a small pinch. Takes time to break the tough skin of a mammal. I don't know about the very large Chinese matid - may be big enough to feel? Don't let them chew on you.
