CPO . . . . You are correct!
They were a pair of crane flies.
First time for me and I'm not young and grew up in the country.

It's a bugera hideosoeous spookekanos. Delicious with tofu and a splash of whipped cream.

It is a pair of 'Giant Western Crane Fly' and a fabulous find as well as a great image that shows their size with respect to the size of the post of the mailbox. If you look closely at the head of your crane fly you will see how it is the same as the one that I attached from a recent post. Mine was a 'standard' and yours are giants although their structures are the same.

Sippy Jug,

I've been following your stacks and they are fantastic.
Many years ago when I was in film, I had a Leica IIIF with a Visoflex, the bellows and the 135mm that was aired with it. I played around with macro but soon gave it up for street photography with that followed by wildlife in general.

Oh how I'd lave to have that rig now.

My crane flies were captured with my iPhone. I always forget how well it can work . .but then I'm forced by circumstances to grab it for "grabs" along the way. . . . I'm seldom disappointed.

Thanks for the feedback and I would like to have your old rig too..! I typically don't add my images to other peoples posts however the 'What is it' question prompted me to give you a little more detail of how splendid your find was and your phone's camera did a great job too.

I have yet to find a giant myself so thanks for posting yours for me to see. I don't know if they are native to my area or if I've yet to find one although I do find many standard size one which I've heard some call large mosquitoes, which of course they are not.

They are harmless and also short lived and yours appear to be mating and will soon expire when their job is done.

Step 1: Capture.
Step 2: Set up video camera in the house.
Step 3: Release in house during a Party.

Well,..... Maybe not. But wouldn't it be fun??? LOL
