If one want/needs hearing aids, he should go to a place that sells a variety of brands because the fitters will work to get the best match for him and his difficulties. A one-brand place will try to sell whatever it is that it has, regardless of its suitability to the person’s particular problems. A one-brand shop is not usually the best choice.

Hearing aids and dramatic hearing loss. Don't expect hearing aids to bring back normal hearing.

No, they won't. But on the other hand they can make you hear much better than you hear without them and let you be more social than you were because you can understand many more conversations. I've never regretted getting hearing aids and I've had them for over five years.

I wish there were hearing aids that would be of help for me. I have tinnitus so I have a constant hissing noise going on inside my head. I was tested and found to have nerve damage as various frequencies. The audiologist told me that my brain (although my wife claims that I don't have one) tries to compensate for the loss and fills in the damaged frequencies with the hissing so it sounds like I have a radio that is off channel all the time however it's coming from the brain and not the ears.

They have models that help with tinnitus IIRC

I went to Costco for hearing aids, but the person couldn't help me. So I went to an ENT and after the test, he told me that I had profound hearing loss. So I wound up with a Cochlear implant. It isn't great, but at least I can hear again.

I was very lucky to find a young lady at Sam’s club by sawgrass mall in Sunrise, Fl. She spent a lot of time we me for the fitting of a proper set of hearings aides and I have avoided getting divorced from my wife. She is there from 10am to 5pm every week day. It was our 53 anniversary gift.

I am avoiding them because the good ones are expensive. I lose my dollar store reading glasses three times a day and my cell phone at least once a week. At least I can call my phone. Not keen on losing a multi thousand dollar little tiny thing.

I understood there was going to be a big price drop because they changed the federal law giving monopolies to certified sellers. Haven’t seen that per se but there seem to be many more available in the few hundred dollar range. I am up to risking that.

I’m a big fan of Costco’s hearing aids. Fully adjustable via my iPhone, tone, volume, settings (music, restaurant mode) and with an audio streamer I can listen to the television independent of the volume my wife wants to listen. This alone is worth the cost. There is a “find my hearing aids” feature. I have never lost them but have left them in , by inattention, when getting into bed or into the shower because they are so nonintrusive. best description of hearing loss is that is isolating. You just give up having things repeated. When my little granddaughter used to try to tell me something exciting I could pick up the cues and smile and nod. Now I find she has some pretty interesting things to say. Life changing for me.

Dear Fellow Hogger: I wish you won't suffer in silence. Try to figure ways to enjoy the russling of the leaves, the chirping of a bird, the incessant nagging of your loved ones and perhaps an occasional "shing" of a shutter.
There are always options.

I get mine from the V A. the brand is Phonak, and they do an excellent job. Including blue tooth for both phone and my computer and tablet.

I have a pair from Costco that ran about $2500. They seem to work fine, but I probably should have chosen the Costco brand and saved $1000. I could have exchanged them for the more expensive brand within 6 months, if they did not suit me.

Also, there is a difference between real hearing aids (which are adjusted for your individual hearing loss) and "sound amplifiers" (which amplify everything, but are ok for some people).

Note one HUGE advantage of Costco is that they will replace your aids (once) if lost or stolen. Happened to me. I think my wife has been screaming at me ever since.

That is great to know.

At least in that instance you can’t hear the screaming...

I went to Costco this morning and ordered a pair of hearing aids and a ultrasonic dryer. The exam and all the hardware was around $1,540. I tried a demo pair and was amazed at the comfort and clarity. The technician who tested/examined me was professional and never pressured me in any way. I wasted a lot of money on cheap mail order ones. All were noisy and had a lot of noise. The hearing aids will be in in one week.

Is the ultrasonic dryer for the hearing aide?

Please report back in a couple weeks on how they perform in the real world.
