Canon R file viewing problems

I have recently acquired a Canon R. I have an iMac which is updated with Mohave. I do not use Apple photos app but keep my photos in a separate file on my desktop. I am finding that randomly when I wish to open a photo the thumbnail shows the photo but the file is just black when I try to look at it. Can anyone suggest what I need to do to overcome this problem? TIA.

I have a Canon R and am running Mohave on three Macs and have not experienced this problem. I only shoot RAW but I doubt that would make a difference.

Something to think about.

You might visit the Support section at USA.CANON.COM and download and install the Canon software for your equipment type. If this doesn't help the OS in viewing the images, you'll have Canon's software to work with the images.

I also only shoot in RAW. I'll check to see if there is any Canon software update that I might need. 'Tis.

I may be wrong, but I think that recently another member had a similar problem and in the end it was a processing setting in the camera that effected his images on export, he saw the unprocessed image in his camera but when he exported the image the camera processed it according to the chosen settings, in his case I think that he inadvertently had chosen B&W. Personally I always move pics on the memory card from camera to computer and never use the export functions on the camera and never use the camera to process so I can't say anything with any kind of authority but I think that I do remember seeing a similar thread.

Update your codec.

Thanks for your input. I only download from the sd card and the problem only occurs once I've edited on or two photos in Photoshop and saved to the same file. I'm using the same system and process as I did with my older model Canon and never had any issues so I'm hoping now that I've downloaded some updated software that the problem will go away!

The EOS RP RAW files use a CR3 extension, vs. CR2 extension for other Canon cameras. I assume the R does the same. You may need updated software.

Go to the Canon support website for EOS R and download Digital Photo Professional for Mac OS.
It is free and it is good software. You should also register your camera there.
I also have the Canon R.

I have a MacBook Air with 8 GB RAM and I get occasional black thumbnails. I also have an iMac with 16 GB RAM and have no issues.
