18 months ago I heard Clyde give a talk and the next day I was able to meet him. He is a very kind and generous man who is a great photographer. Imagine walking through the everglades pulling a canoe behind you loaded with your 8x10 and all the equipment. Well worth visiting any of his galleries!

Getting up at 5:30 obviously won't help!

Just in case there is anyone in UHH that has not checked out his work, Clyde Butcher is our Ansel Adams of the Everglades. Enjoy his work.

Clyde Butcher - https://clydebutcher.com

Internationally renowned fine art photographer and environmentalist.

I visited his gallery in the Everglades last month. Remarkable.

A few years back while visiting family in Florida I discovered Clyde's gallery on the Tamiami Trail. I was awestruck! It made me wonder why I even try to do landscapes (of course that sentiment didn't last long but it hit hard at the time). I did not find the Everglades an easy place to photograph in that the perfect light wasn't there often, at least during my time there, and that made me appreciate his fantastic work even more. I think any photographer, or would be photographer like me, would enjoy a visit to the gallery if they are anywhere close.

Thanks for posting this.

Mine would ask, "where have you been hiding that thing? I haven't seen it for years."

Here in Florida Mr. Clyde Butcher has gained a reputation for his beautiful photography of the Everglades. His gallery in the Big Cypress National Preserve area is located about 34 miles from where I live going Hway 41 West. I have visited that place many times and in one occasion he invited me to see his cameras and darkroom. He was using large format cameras with Ilford paper exclusively made for him and developing his image if memory does not fail with Kodak HC-110 developer. Many of his work is in exhibition at this gallery but when he moved to Venice, here in South Florida he also established a gallery there.

A couple of years ago he had a stroke and after lots of physical therapy and encouragement by his family he began to photograph again but this time with digital. I have not seen any of his digital work but I will this coming October when I begin my photo excursions into the Everglades.
Because of his photography of the Park and because of his work as a conservationist he is well known as the "Ansel Adams of the Everglades."

If you have visited South Florida and you have not been to any of his galleries I encourage you to pay him a visit. He likes to talk to the visitors about his view of the ecology and his work.
It was a great experience for me and I sincerely hope you will enjoy the visit and admire his excellent b&w images.

Thank you for the Clyde Butcher link. He deserves to be more widely known as does O Winston Link and Al Aubrey Bodine. I am sure other members of this group could offer the names of other photographers worthy of mlorf

I blame my cat, Ed, for the inelegant conclusion of my above message. He thinks he should be the only "laptop" when I am at my desk. My point is that there are many photographers beyond the famous ones who usually come to mind. It would like saying there are other worthy architects besides Frank Lloyd Wright.

Yes, totally true and fitting to my stay there. I expressed my thoughts to a docent in the gallery about how difficult I found landscape photography and capturing good light in that area, and how envious I was of Clyde's work, and she made the comforting remark "he lives here and that makes a big difference." But of course, trying to think realistically, even if I also lived there I could not possibly match Clyde's work. Some of the greatest examples of photographic art I have ever seen.

I was told during my visit there that Clyde did use, for most of his career, multiple view cameras from 4 X 5 up to 20 X 24. Imagine packing a camera of that size and weight through mud, standing water, etc. It's clear that he worked very hard to achieve the greatness in photography that he has.

And he goes thru the swamp in his bare feet. Amazing.
