The first two pics show a juvie--the last two show an adult. Butcher birds have a beautiful song, but their habits are not always as nice. They have a 'larder', which is usually a small, spiky branch. On these spikes, they hang future meals, just like a butcher hangs sides of beef in his cold room. These meals could be frogs, mice, lizards, & baby birds. Downloading is recommended.

Just fantastic pictures, clarity and colour.
.We have a similar Butcher bird here in Florida, the Loggerhead Shrike. One of its favorite foods is the lubber, a brightly coloured but very poisonous grasshopper. After the butcher bird hangs it out to dry and drain for a few days, it is safe to eat.

I didn’t know the Lubbers had any natural enemies (except me). I’m glad to hear that they do!

Earl...great images. Are these birds the one referred to as Thorn-Birds ? They look so ordinary and nothing of what you describe at first notice. I would never suspect them as worthy of such behavior but nature can be quite harsh and I really shouldn't be surprised at all. The strong eat the weak you know.
