Here in swampy southwest Michigan the only rattlers we have are massasaugas. They will strike but generally really have to be provoked. They are more likely to hide. Generally, reported bites were mostly folks who didn't let them be, not ones who had a surprise encounter.

Have you seen one of those recently? I haven't in years. I am headed tomorrow to the area I last saw one, near Rogers City.

I saw one once on a path between ponds at Wolf Lake Fish Hatchery in Kalamazoo. They're supposed to be very shy, rare to see one, not like southwest rattlers who stretch themselves out on rocks. I don't go wandering in the wetlands around me, but I'm sure there are a few there. It's the right habitat.

Where in NM was this? It looks like a diamondback but rather pale, but that may be because of the color of the surroundings. Handsome snake anyway. How long was it? Mostly in southwest NM (mountainous area) I've seen blacktailed rattlers. It takes a lot to even get them to rattle; mostly they just try to get away. I don't consider rattling and posturing to be aggressive behavior as much as the snake saying, "Hey, I'm here and you're scaring me, and I might bite."

I agree about the behavior. This was at City of Rocks State Park, between Deming and Silver City. The little fella was close to 4 ft. long. Western Diamond-back.

Cool. I live in Silver City. This explains the coloration. Hope you enjoyed your visit.

Diane's, Diane' Bakery across the street, Adobe Springs, Jalisco's for Mexican, Nancy's Silver Cafe also for Mexican--all in the downtown area. Another good one for Mexican food is Mi Casita. I rarely eat out. Ask some locals where to eat in Hurley and Bayard, which have some good little dives as well.

Really! I was there several times this year. We are members at the Kalamazoo Nature Center and we know the folks who run Hidden Savanna native plant nursery near there.
