Traveling to SD on business. Wondering if my 16-300 will be sufficient for seal photos. I’m trying to leave the 200-500 at home.
Thoughts pls from those who have been there, pls.

You can always crop a bit, if necessary.
Didn’t know they had seals in South Dakota!

Oh, yeah. Sea lions, too. I go once a week. Recently they have moved from the Children's Pool to the La Jolla Cove, about .4 mile north. Good as far as I'm concerned because there is better access at the Cove. There also are lots of pelicans, cormorants, and squirrels. And good people action, too, out on paddle boards, jet boats, ski boats, parasailing, biplanes, swimming, snorkeling. Here are a few pictures from this past week, taken with my Tamron 16-300.
Also, I'm a 26-year member of San Diego Zoo Global, so I have free tickets to the San Diego Zoo and the Zoo's Safari Park. If you'd like two, let me know.
I had good results at La Jolla several years ago with my D7000 and 28-300. I took one shot of a seal some ways out in the water and was able to crop it and get a nice head shot, at least on the computer. I don't know how it would print out.

Where are you photographing the seals?
If you go to La Jolla beach you definitely won't need the 500mm telephoto. The seals will be about 100' away from you.
If you want to catch them frolicking in the water offshore, perhaps the tele could be useful.

Ha ha yeah. Definitely do not approach the sea lions close. They call them "sea lions" for a reason. LOL.
That sign is more to protect the seals than the humans. We need to give them some space.
The seals are used to humans. Do not try to pet them but they won't attack you unless you get too close to a baby. Getting close to a baby is never a good idea with any wild animal.

Imagine if you will, being bitten by a 600 pound pitbull!

And that is just the warning. You can hope they don’t take a disliking to you.

Depends on where you are taking the photo from.
The 16-300mm will be totally adequate if you are against taking the longer lens.
I would not leave it but you have decided to it appears due to only taking one lens.
I do not live there but have visited the coast many times while living in AZ and NV and many times used a medium lens with great results. So if an excellent versatile lens like you 16-300 is all you take it will give you the shots you want if you place yourself in good locations.
Have fun.

Depends. Usually you can get quite close, if you can stand the smell.
But I have to tell you, you really want to go to San Diego to shoot seals?
I can think of a lot better things to shoot there besides seals.
Just take the 16-300 and some nose plugs and hope the wind does not come toward you.
In most places you will be right on top of them. I like to get the mouth wide open head shots.
