There have been numerous links to some interesting jazz performances on here. So... My turn:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N7ta17oBv2wIgnasi Terraza's piano prelude is amazing.
There's a lot on Youtube from this group, going back to when Andrea Motis was in her late teens.
My father’s best friend George Weiss wrote the lyrics. He was contracted to ASCAP (a publishing firm) while George Shearing, who wrote the music was contracted to BMI. There was a rule at the time that BMI and ASCAP composers couldn’t collaborate on a song. So George used the name B Y Forster. ‘Birdland” is credited with breaking the BMI stranglehold on the publishing business.
So the song, besides being great (I prefer the Sarah Vaughn version, although it was Ella Fitzgerald who had the monster hit) was a big deal as well for business reasons.
A. J. R: Thanks for the link. I've actually seen that before, still fascinating even though I don't speak Spanish. I find it interesting because all 4 of my kids were in a strong music program in high school, one of the best programs in the state. They all played in bands at Symphony Hall in Boston. My son was in the jazz band that was invited to play at Rose Hall at the Lincoln Center Jazz venue in New York, part of their "Essentially Ellington" program.
I'm sure you've probably seen the video of Andrea playing sax with Jesse Davis when she was maybe 17. A really talented lady.
