I think this is a Tiger Moth, it was trying to hide from me in a plant for about 10 min. I finally got this shot before it flew away, shot with a 50mm canon compac macro, 2x converter and a 36mm extention tube, he was watching me very close.
I SEE WHY YOU ENJOY YOUR HOBBY. NICE
Thanks PRETENDER, and I do enjoy my hobby, just wish I had more time, I am retired and still find it hard to get the time to pull out the camera.
Out of curiosity, what is your working distance with "a 50mm Canon compac macro, 2x converter and a 36mm extention tube"? What is the advantage of adding the 2x tele-extender?

The working distance was about two inches. With the 2x converter on the 50mm it gives me a 1:1 at 4 1/2 inches without it I am not getting a 1:1 and have to crop, this shot is not cropped and my intention of using the tube was to get the close eye shot.

Still need some clarification.
On an APS-C size sensor, a true macro lens will capture 1:1 (life-size) at MFD. That is the definition of a true macro lens. If additional tubes or lenses are needed, then it is not a macro lens. What lens did you use?

I am using a Canon 50D with a Canon Compact - Macro EF Lens and using the Quarter/Dime test for 1:1 I can only obtain the 1:1 result at full focus with the 2X converter, I do not think that the lens I am using is a true Macro lens.
I just re-visited this thread, and want to give "kudos" for focus and composition, especially in open shade (no direct illumination).
Please continue to submit macro-photographs.
Those eyes are a little creepy looking.
