A Bokeh sampler

I found an image I liked of hostas, and decided to shoot it with a bunch of different vintage lenses, all known for their bokeh rendering. I'm putting ten images here, just to demonstrate how differently a subject can be rendered by different lenses. The notion that lenses should be neutral and as sharp as possible and add nothing that the eye does not see is fine for many kinds of photography, but the art goes well beyond that limited concept IMO.

I've added a gallery to my site that compares 36 lenses, and is easier to view than these images. Hop on over if you are interested to:

Very interesting. Thanks for the link to your site. I am enjoying the "Liquid Light" images in particular.

Have you altered the images in any other way, they do not look like normal shots to me (btw. I do no like any of them)?

Tastes differ. Slight sharpening and some small manipulation of contrast and microcontrast.

Very nice! And no comments (yet) about the real meaning of "bokeh."

Except for the fourth and last image, it seems to me that the background overpowers the subject.

I realize this was about the Bokeh, and each example could be perfect for the right subject.

Thanks for sharing.

These are wonderful and you are the master. I saw these and wondered if you had posted a series with a hybrid lens some time ago. I was thrilled to find that post also. Great work and unique art. Thank you.

These are great, Toby, they are so surreal and qualify as art, well done.
