These were taken a minute apart

The same location with very different results.

I was sitting down on a small table looking out an upstairs window at this sunset up at our ski hill. The first one I didn't pan the camera down enough and I got a little of the upper window frame. The second one is better. I just converted them to JPEG nothing else done to them.

Any ideas what happened.

They are both very good, the first one is a very interesting compassion.

Glare happened. Did you have a lens protection filter on?

I did not do it on purpose, let alone know how it happened.

Sure hope someone can come up with a reason for the first one

Yes I had a UV and a polarizer

#1 looks like a translucent circular regular edged object with a hole in the center. Filter ? Strange.

I like the first one. The second one is kind of boring.

If you look at the top of the first photo it looks like the shutter is in the frame. It could have been some sort of camera malfunction. Never mind I just read the post again.

I'd guess something on the window that magnified the sunlight.

I think the sun hit your filter just right and you took a picture of the glare on the filter. You could remove the filter, could help because lens have better coatings, but it can still happen.

I agree with Bleirer. A once in a million shot!

The light hit the lens at slightly different angles-since the Sun, and Earth, both moved a bit between the two shots, and the amount of glare / flare varied enough to create the different images.

The Earths orbital time is one year, so approx 1 degree per day. This not likely the cause. Earth’s rotational period is 360 degrees per 24 hours. A more likely culprit.

If you had BOTH a UV filter and a polarizer on, it’s probably light reflecting from frontside of “back” forward to backside of “front” filter and then backwards into the camera lens.

You do NOT need a UV filter when using a CPL.

Great photo, though!
