After down loading and reviewing photos on the computer in a master file and making copies into separate subject folders, then I reformat the SD card to wipe it clean and reuse it. How often can a card be reformatted and reused? By the way I keep several new cards on hand.
The Compact Flash Association claims that in typical usage, a Compact Flash card can be used for more than 100 years with no loss or deterioration of data. I think you are safe for this lifetime at least.
I've had memory cards that I have used heavily for years (more then ten) with no problems.
These are mostly CF cards but SD should be similar I would expect.
Like Gator.... I have SD cards that I have had since they invented them. I have used them for a multitude of things, reformated them for other purposes and never have had a problem. My SD cards for my camera, I tend to keep for my cameras....mainly because I buy the faster and higher class cards for the cameras. However, IF they come out with a better SD card for the camera, I would have no problem using the slower cards for other purposes.
Hardware wise, the memory cards are very stable, as long as you don't abuse them with static shots, extreme temperatures, water, crud on the contact fingers, etc. Work fine.... Last a long time.
One tip.... always format the cards IN YOUR CAMERA when being used for the camera.
What is the necessity of formatting an SD card?
H2testw is a downloadable, free utility that will test and verify your SD cards. Googls for it.

I just use the utility that came with my camera to erase the photos from my card after downloading and have had no problems with it. I have a secondary firmware on my cards that I would have to reload after each download if I reformatted so I don't do it.

Your reply although appreciated doesn't answer my question.

Keep that in mind when making your will. You don't want to pass along something that will fail when your heirs pass it along.

My answer is that I see no necessity to formatting. Is that clearer? I thought that is what I was saying when I stated that I do not format my cards. They will probably need to be formatted with the first use to set up the file structure your camera uses but not after that. Google it.

I'm taking it with me. Are you kidding? Think of the landscapes in the after life, no matter which way you go.

Reminds me of "Soylent Green."
Maybe they'll have a stable version of Windows up there.

I'm thinking that the computers up there will be like the ones on Iron Man where the screen just floats in mid air and everyone gets a t2 internet connection. Down below would be windows 95 and dial up.

I format a new card in camera once and then never re-format it again. I do have my cards marked with the camera model IE: D70 or D200. In a pinch I have even taken a card with photo files from my D70 on it and put it into my D200 and continued to shoot. Worked fine just different file names.
I tranfer images via a card reader to my computer. Verify they are transferred & good and then delete them from the card.
The card is then ready to put back in the camera and shoot again !!! I haven't had a card go bad yet. AMEN...........
