Is it possible to use a tele-converter to increase the reach on a AF-P Nikkor 70-300mm lens? I have a D7500 camera and looking to get more reach on wildlife photos.

Simple answer, check the Nikon web site for compatibility.

As a practical matter, no.

Get closer, maximize your image quality and CROP and use well applied pixel enlargement software if needed.

Most probably you can but that lens is not very fast. It is going to have a dark view of your subjects.

A Nikon TC, no. But a Kenko TC will fit. You will lose AF function and the viewfinder will be very dark making manual focus very difficult. Simply put, any TC on a slow variable aperture lens is never a good idea. A longer lens is always the best choice.

You can get extra reach by using the 1.3x crop facility built into the camera

I have the Kenko 1.4x Teleplus Pro 300 and it works on all of my lenses - all auto functions work. So that I don't provide misinformation, I just put it on with my Fx Nikkor 70-300mm AF-S ED VR lens and all auto functions work fine. With it on, the largest aperture at 98mm (=70mm x 1.4) is f/6.3 and at 420mm (=300mm x 1.4) it is f/8. I typically only use the TC with my longer lens but no reason not to with this lens.

Your lens is the AF-P version which I'm not familiar with but you should check with Kenko.

This ABSOLUTELY DOES NOT give you any extra reach!

On occasion I used to put a 2x on my Sigma 80-300 back in film days. It worked but I can't vouch for the quality of the result.

I know many photographers who confuse crop with reach.

I agree. This lens is not designed with a matching teleconverter. And using a generic just doesn't work very well. I have tried it, and just wasn't pleased with the results.

I have experimented with 3 resizing programs - ON1 Resize, Topaz Gigapixel AI and the built into Photoshop called Preserve Details. I found ON1 Resize to work best.
