What should I buy, and what should I avoid?

Thanks

Did you do a search?
Even now, there is an ongoing thread responsive to your question.

I suspect that a lot of people, including me, either don't know how to do a search or get tired of getting hits from 2015. Since you seem to be an expert, why don't you take some time and share your expertise on doing searches in the form of a tutorial. I would sure appreciate it and I'm sure others in my situation would too. I look forward to seeing in the next week or so. Thanks in advance.

The link I posted is almost an exact duplicate of the question asked in this thread, so no need for two duplicate concurrent threads on the same subject. That thread already contains some applicable answers to the question and it’s just getting started. Why not just follow that thread and see if your question is answered?

If you want the best available data on drive reliability, go to Backblaze.com and look at their reports. They report every quarter on the drive reliability of the various drives they are using, and you can look at previous reports to see the “big picture”. Backblaze runs literally tens of thousands of drives and is non- partisan, so while not perfect (they usually test only consumer grade drives), it’s about the best large scale data there is available. It’s much more useful than the anecdotal reports from individual users that you’ll get.

If after reviewing that data, you have specific questions, I’ll be glad to try to address them.

I agree that it very effectively answered the OP's question and I believe he thanked you for it.

It did not, however, answer my post. Perhaps you would be willing to help out we who don't know how to do an effective search on UHH. I know there is a secret there because when I do a search I get results for 2015. Would you be willing to write a tutorial on how to do a search which only delivers current posts. It would really help out we who don't know how.

Oh. Sorry, I thought you wanted a tutorial on selecting an external drive - I misunderstood. I am no expert on searching UHH, so perhaps someone else can be of more help. I Google “UHH and the subject” (or vice verse), but I’m always eager to learn a better way. Anyone?

I recently replaced a Buffalo that I used for 9 years and only because Buffalo and other "techies" told me I should because of its age

Excuse me, I guess. I meant no disrespect or didn’t mean to be curmudgeon-like. I assumed the “search” heading at he top of the page was evident enough.
My post was a suggestion for the OP, not intended to be critical.
But no, I am no expert, and at this time have no further suggestions.

With the typing people do to suggest searching, it's so much easier to just answer a question.
And answers will be current, not from 2015.
