What's Left Behind...
Garnet, now a small ghost town in northwest Montana, was a thriving mining town in the 1800's. However, it was abandoned after the silver played out. Many folks just up and left, leaving behind their personal possessions rather than transport them over a very arduous and lengthy trail back to civilization. Here are a few of them...
What great shots. It's amazing there is anything left. Does the place have a caretaker or are people in Montana just more respectful than most of the rest of the country?
The town is under the auspices of the Bureau of Land Management, and has a staffed visitor center for the summer months (closed in the winter as the access roads become impassable.) And I have seen things like old nails, small bottles, etc. that would be easy to pick up and spirit away, but they seem to remain each year. I guess there is still some respect for preserving these locations intact for the ones who come after instead of selfishly taking them for oneself.
The shoes are so human story connected, the people have passed on but the signs of their work lives tell the story.
