When this is attached, sometimes I am only able to view the battery level in the main camera body. Both batteries are fully charged. Usually end up turning camera body off, unscrewing battery pack then reassemble.
Is there a proper procedure to do this?

Don't have the D 500 - a couple of other Nikons. Suspect if you go to custom menu, shooting / display, battery order and change it to the grip, you'll get that info on the screen when you check.

Check in your camera setting menu. There is a section where you determine the type of battery being used, the order in which they are to be used and the battery meter will show the active battery only. Good luck

In the Wrench Menu, scroll down about 3/4 and you'll see:
MB-D17 battery type:
Battery Order:
Battery Info: Will show the charge per battery, no. of shots and Battery age.

Have the same combination - never had a problem with the camera not seeing the battery grip. Maybe clean the contacts?? And set up the battery order as you would like it to be - you should be able to see both the batteries and their charge state. Always turn off the camera before connecting/disconnecting the grip

However you have it set in the menu it should show both batteries in the display .BUT if you are using a EN EL 18 that's not properly chipped or even a very old 3rd party EN EL 15 you could have a problem.

Have it set as suggested but battery level highlighted is for body battery not grip

That's as it should be showing both batteries and there discharge levels ...you clearly have internal battery set to run down first ...I don't see a problem

If you don't see both when you look at "Battery Info" - then something might be off. Mine looks like the image above.

I have battery info in my quick menu to easily check, and I assigned Fn2 to show the quick menu. On the top LCD, I think it only shows one battery which is probably the primary one configured in the menu settings above.

I just sent in my D850 for the very same problem. The only “ solution “ is a trip to Nikon repair shop. Disappointed.

...I sometimes don't get the connection right away and have to make absolutely sure it's tight. It *is* a connection issue, at least for me, but thankfully I can deal with it. To the OP; tighten as much as you can.

Are you using a silicon skin which restricts connection and is it a third party grip …
As I keep on saying with hogs the poster never gives the full specification of the problem...

Battery grip is a genuine Nikon MB-D17 and no “skin” on my camera which was brand new when purchased in April this year.
