Just a hobbyist who feels that he has gotten in over his head! Read about the advantages of shooting in RAW format, so I did last weekend at a family wedding (Canon 7D, 16gb card,). Loaded the card onto my MacbookPro using Camera RAW and Elements 8 and I got a series of blank, white thumbnails with the upper right corner turned down with a .CR2 extension, but no image. I can open images individually, convert to .DNG and from there to .jpg, but that is really labor intensive, especially since I shot hundreds of pics. Is there a way to view the photos more easily as thumbnails? Is there a way to convert to JPEG in batch mode? I would like to share some of the shots by email. I don't know if the average person can open images in .DNG format. Advice, techniques, and thoughts welcome. I can use the help.

I am new to this website too, but I may offer this: Photoshop
elements has the ability to process multiple images (including Raw) and converting them in a batch to many formats including .jpg.
Simply load the program in the edit mode, go to file and down the list to ..process multiple images and follow the prompts.

I hope this get you going in the right direction.

I use PS and Bridge. You might need latest PS to view 7D RAWs. I usually select few/all RAWs, double click and they open up in a "adjustment" window. There I select ALL (upper left) so that any modification I do applies to them all. Then I click on Save images (bottom left) and have a cup of coffee.

Believe the issue has to do with lack of RAW plug-in for the mac. This was discussed a few days ago here.

I don't know exactly how the MbPro and your editing software work, Windows/7 doesn't display RAW thumbnails in its Explorer view, either. There are, I've heard, codecs you can load that will do it but it's not there in native Windows. In what mode are you looking at 'white thumbnails' ?

Next Question, why do you need to convert to .DNG and then to .JPG? Can't your software go directly from .CR2 to .JPG? Canon's DPP words fine for that but I'm not sure they have a Mac version.

I guess another thought is that you kind of negate the reason for shooting in RAW in the first place if you just load 'em all up and convert straight away. The reason for RAW is that you load an image into an editor, make your visual changes and whatnot and then save the output as a JPG or PNG or TIFF file. Your .CR2 stays original.

Do a google search for " JPEG Extractor". I have used these types of programs in the past and they will work. Depending on your camera setting capabilities, you can take a picture in RAW+Jpeg mode. This will give you your jpeg for viewing and RAW file for post processing.

What you are seeing is the RAW file, the software that came with your camera will open them and I believe will allow batch processing

In your Elements 8 - go to HELP and then UPDATES. That should download the new update for the CR2 RAW files.
I had to do that in Elements 9 to be able to see my RAW files.

Since you have a Canon 7D did you keep the software that came with it? Canon Digital Professional and EOS Utilities.
The Utilities software is what you use to download the pictures directly from your camera or card reader to your computer. The Digital Prof. software allowes you to edit the pictures and convert to jpg in batch processing.
Just a note. Leave your pictures in RAW to do any editing then convert to jpg as a last step.

Good luck

Depending on if your camera has the option, I have been advised to always shoot in RAW + JPG. You can look at the JPGs to pick the files you want to go to post production with.

I noticed that when I use picasa I do not get the full colors from my RAW photos. I have Light room as well and it shows beautiful color but cant seem to send photos from there via email. Too much for my brain to handle
