A series of season’s first New England Asters

By mid next week my patch will be covered. All taken with Sony a6300 at f6.3 with Zone Focus Area, Meter Mode Multi, WB Shade (tint centered). Varying ISO: 100 to 1600, doubling. This caused the shutter speed to double as well. Was looking for when noise kicked in, if it did. I can’t tell.

They look kinda scrawny. I am sorry if that sounds harsh. It is just what I see.

Good technical work, focus is spot on, background is nicely blurred. Good exposure and color.

There might be a teeny tiny bit more grain in the dark areas on the ISO 1600 version vs the 100 but not much noise that I can see. :)

If you look real close you can see a slight increase in noise from one to the next but nothing that is objectionable.

Yes, they are sorta sparse in the petal department. Maybe, thats why they are New England Asters - not given to overstatement.

Think I will repeat and go way up on the ISO. Will need to wait for about the same lighting conditions to keep that variable out of the mix. Should I do something else to standardize. In this series, the camera selected the shutter speed so that the amount of light for each image would be the same.

The common thinking on ISO is use the lowest that you can. That depends on a lot of things, but always use the lowest possible down to the base ISO of the camera. Do not default to higher ISO just because it is there. Just saying.

Why use such a high ISO? Lower the ISO the better the photo.

The reason is the lower ISO settings produce less noise in the image than than the higher ISO settings.

He was doing a test. Read in the opening, Was looking for when noise kicked in, if it did. I can’t tell.

The OP seems to be done with this topic, but increasing the ISO to 3200, 6400 (and beyond if available) should help your test. If conducted in darker conditions, might be easier also.

Good on ya for attempting controlled tests to learn the limits acceptable to you.
