I saw this flower which is about 1/2" in length and it grows in shady area near a lake in Nashville TN. The pic was taken on Aug 30 '19.
This is the only thing that came up in a visual search of bing:desmodium.
It is called Panicled tickclover.

I don't have direct experience with this one, but definitely a picture match to Desmodium paniculatum, panicked tickclover, aka narrow leaf tick trefoil. 3 feet tall.
