Weird Nikon serial number

So, I like to surf around the Goodwill online auction page, looking for interesting finds, odd lenses, possibly good deals on bodies, etc. Found this this evening, checked all the usual info pages, nothing. From what I can decipher, this serial number shouldn't exist. Any of the more informed Hoggers have any ideas?

And, oh hey, look, it's my 50th post. Does that mean I'm not a N00b any more?

I just checked the website below, and like you said, there is not one camera with a serial number starting with "1". Thom Hogan though, on his website says "Don't get locked into those values" as he explains there could be certain exceptions. Although, looking at his possible explanations, it doesn't really appear that a "1" would be used.

1 is used for South America bodies.

Perhaps an early demonstration model of the D3100 not intended to be sold on the market, but somehow ended up there anyway. Or, what I think is more likely, the label was made in error and not caught in time.

I wonder if Nikon USA will repair it?

Nikon USA won't repair any D3100 anymore, long discontinued. Even if it weren't the camera would be considered grey market and they would not repair it.

I was actually relatively certain I would get the answer from MT Shooter. Thanks.
