Note the word rumors in the URL.

Nikon mentioned a few years back that their five year plan would have them concentrating on high end cameras. I think if this rumor is true it will leave Nikon with three DSLRs. I read the D6 is in the works. Anyone know what the others will be?

Exactly!
And the statement in the article, "I think it is safe to assume that only high-end DSLRs will survive in the future." That's just speculation, not a safe assumption. Many photographers who own high-end DSLRs started with entry level DSLRs. To discontinue entry level DSLRs may very well drive future DSLR customers towards some other brand that does offer an entry level DSLR. And this would ultimately hurt Nikon's competitiveness in the market.
It’s a rumor until it happens.

I have been expecting Nikon to pare their 3nnn, 5nnn, 7nnn families down to one member; from the point-of-view of lens production, maybe it would make sense to sell “FF” only, and use D750 as “intro” camera.
Following usual steps of Japanese companies, they may not announce anything - just do it.
Scare quote. (AKA click bait) It got your attention didn't it?
More than likely true. However that headline should have included "as they move to mirror-less". Which Nikon is. Along with the rest of 'em.
Nikon is not looking to close it doors so of course they will be discontinuing old technology as new is introduced.
