Hello fellow Hogger's. I'm a newbie here and would like to pick your noggins about macro. I'm shooting with a Nikon d5100 and was wondering what tool I should purchase to get started. Currently I have narrowed it down to either a Nikon 105mm f/2.8 AI-s or a Raynox DCR-250. What say you?🤔

The Nikon 105mm is a great lens. I use a Tokina 100mm. It's much cheaper and is highly reviewed. I love mine.

The D5100 will not meter with a non-CPU lens like the Micro-Nikkor AiS you mention.
I suggest you go to https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/s-102-1.html and check the links in bold type on the first page. That’s also a better section to ask macro questions (more facts, fewer opinions than here in Main). What you will need depends upon the type of subject, shooting conditions, end use of your images and budget. Macrophotography is fascinating - have fun!

Good question. The only lens I have for the Nikon is the AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G. I also have a Panasonic FZ-80 that I use for birds, squirrels, etc.

Thanks. Don't think I've looked at the Tokina yet...

I have the Tamron 90mm 2.8. that I use on my Nikon 7200. It's a great lens.

There a few macro lenses that you can consider. The Tamron 90mm mention above is reported to be a good choice. The Nikon 85mm and Nikon 105mm are good choices. See Ken Rockwell's page on Nikon Lens compatibility. ( https://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/compatibility-lens.htm ) The AiS lens you mention is manual only. I am not sure the in camera meter works with this lens. Modern versions of the 105mm are fine. BTW you can use the DCR-250 with a macro lens for higher magnifications. I recommend a step-down ring from the thread size to the DCR's 43mm read threads.
