Do you mean natural amethyst crystal? Highly reflective surface. Can you back-light?

Other stones photograph perfectly normally. Yes it is a purple natural amethyst, but comes out blue. These are set in silver by my husband who makes silver jewellery for a hobby.

Perhaps if you posted some examples and included the equipment, as well as lighting, you are using, someone here could help.

Do you have any loose amethyst crystals to set on a white background for comparison photos? I suspect the difference has to do with light reflecting internally off of the silver mount.

What is your lighting source?

Night light and then indoor daylight were my light sources. Have had no trouble with colour shift photographing other stones set in silver - a similar pendant with green amethyst and a cabochon star ruby set as a ring.

I am guessing you are shooting with a Canon.

If it allows for it, try playing with the whiye balance settings to compensate for the color shift, it should help.

Two statements from Wiki (because nobody believes me when I say it):

Amethyst is a violet variety of quartz often used in jewelry.

Pure violet cannot be reproduced by a Red-Green-Blue (RGB) color system, but it can be approximated by mixing blue and red.

Thank you for that explanation. That answer is very satisfactory.

Ginna, try the RGB settings below (from Wiki) for a close approximation:

Violet Color coordinates
Hex triplet #8F00FF
------------------------------------------
sRGBB    (r, g, b) (143, 0, 255)
------------------------------------------
CMYKH   (c, m, y, k) (44, 100, 0, 0)
HSV       (h, s, v) (274°, 100%, 100[9]%)
Source HTML Color Chart @274
B:Normalized to [0–255] (byte)
H:Normalized to [0–100] (hundred)

Is your amethyst different colors than these crystals?

Purple is a very difficult color to photograph. My son's football uniform was purple and my D70s never got it right. Tom Hogan sent me an explanation which I'm sure you can google. I understand high end cameras i.e. D800 get it right.

Google Whibal card and get one. This will enable you to color correct your RAW files in Photoshop. Check out their website and read about it. It is very simple to use and very accurate, and you will get consistent results...
