Wow, just another reason to use that feature, if I have it.

They've done it in the lab. But, has it happened to anybody in the wild?

One shouldn't give in to paranoia.
Theoretically it may be possible, but highly unlikely to ever happen. It would require a someone specialized in hacking cameras, familiar with your particular camera model and by shear luck, just happen to intercept your wifi transfer. And on top of this, that you would be naive enough to actually give in to the demand of payment, as it most certainly won't fix anything once the hacker receives the funds. Hackers have better things to do than attempt to attack cameras. There's no money in it for them.

From the article:
"an increasing number of electronic gadgets are vulnerable to hackers these days"

"(Canon) advises users to avoid connecting to an unsecured network such as free Wi-Fi spots, disabling the camera’s network functions when not in use, and updating the official firmware via a download from Canon’s website"

This is just common sense for ANY wireless device.

And another good reason to enable wi-fi only when needed is it it burns battery power.
