Repair a Canon 50D Philadelphia/South Jersey

My sister was told by Canon Service that they no longer service the 50D. Can any of my Philadelphia area Hog colleagues recommend a local camera repair in our area? It needs a sensor cleaning and has a shutter that malfunctions on occasion. My advise to her was to upgrade but she loves her 50D. Thanks for any suggestions.

Consider that a used 50D lists at KEH for $190. There's no way you can get a shutter replaced for that price.

You could start here:

As CHG CANON stated a shutter repair would be more expensive then buying a replacement 50D. If your sister loves the 50D think how she will feel about a 70D. Right now B&H has a used 70D, rated at 9+ for $490. Probably not much more then repairs to the 50D would cost. Plus, considering where you live you would have it overnight.

Edit: Even though Canon may not service the 50D any longer many of the shops on the list I provided still would I would bet.

Authorized Camera Repair on North York road in Willow Grove PA will repair pretty much any kind of digital or analog camera.

As for your sisters 50D, and I do have one that works fine; unless she has sentimental attachments to the camera, it may be more cost effective to get another one or even something a bit newer. Authorized Camera Repair will give you a cost estimate before doing any repairs. I have had several lenses repaired by them and they do excellent work. They have even serviced a few of my older EF lenses that Canon no longer services or supplies parts for. When I got my old EF 28-70 f/2.8L back from them it looked and worked like new. They are also honest. I dropped off my EF 28-300L for repairs and a week later they told me they could fix it but Canon service would more than likely do it faster and cheaper. They were right; Canon charged over $100 less than ACR quoted and did the repairs in one day.

The 90D will soon be out. The 50D is 4 generations older. Upgrade.

If you need a sensor cleaning - - just get inexpensive cleaning "sticks" and cleaning fluid and clean it yourself!! It is not hard to do, just follow instructions to lift the mirror and lightly swab the sensor a few times -- just make sure that your camera battery is fully charged to prevent the mirror from coming down on your swabing stick. Sometimes just a blower bulb will clean the dust off (I guess you don't have a Giottos Rocket air blower?).
If you would like more information, Utube would be a great help; I advise you to do this. People are getting $55 for a 5 minute cleaning - (gouging the innocent). Your sisters' 50D is the perfect camera to practice on.

Oh!! and don't mistake thinking that seeing specks through the viewfinder are located on the sensor, these specks are not on the sensor and does no harm. Do a shot of a white object at f/16 - 22 with your 50mm lens to check for specks, etc. on your sensor before you clean your sensor.

I have a 50D in excellent working condition but I wanted to upgrade before retirement so I bought the 5D MK IV. Luckily all my lenses fit on both cameras. I still use and love my 50 D. I can understand why you sister likes it. You might want to take her to camera store where she can try different cameras. She might find another Canon camera that suits her.

As I live in the New York City area I know of a reputable camera repair place. But here is the rub. To travel to NYC and then to lay out the money seems futile. As CHG_CANON mentioned that it would be cost effective to buy another Canon 50D on line than to repair the current. The one needing repair could be a nice paperweight or be renamed as spare parts. Just kidding!
