Depends where, and when, you are visiting. It is a bit like the USA, but without the extreme cold in winter of your northern states.

My wife and I were there in Feb/March 2017. Far northern OZ is tropical, very tropical. Hot and humid no matter when you go. Brisbane and south was very nice weather. We got a chance to dive the Great Barrier Reef while in Cairns (pronounced Cannes). Very warm weather but the diving was great. We had a lot of snorkelers on the boat with us if you don't dive.
We spent time in Melbourne and the weather was great.

March/April (Spring) September/October (Autumn) in that order...
Avoid January/February (too hot) especially in the North, and June - August (too cold) in the South
