Put a motor in a lens, then the lens will eventually fail and become irreparable. Don't put a motor in a lens, and the lens could last a lifetime.
Which is the best option for the consumer?
Which is the best option for the camera company?
I was a Pentax user when I decided to go AF in 1995; I specifically chose a Canon system because their USM in-lens motors were so much quieter than the in-body systems used by Pentax and Nikon. In the 24 years since then, both Nikon and Pentax have gradually moved to systems very much like what Canon jumped to.
