Scam alert on eBay!

I sold an 80D on eBay last week.....money went into my Pay Pal account. I printed the shipping address for buyer in GA. Late in the eve (hadn't mailed yet) got an email saying that ship address needed changing. Printed a new label. Next morn I was delayed setting off for P.O.....received ANOTHER email changing the address again, now knew something was amiss. Called eBay and reported it. Scam is; you mail the item to "new address", they make off with the item and your buyer never sees it and now you have to repay buyer and you are out the item & the sale.
Always check any emails (if you're selling on eBay) through your email account (messages). I dodged that one only because they sent a second email and blew it.
Now I am forewarned!

Sad commentary of what goes in in this world now.

eBay seems to have a good security organization - hopefully they will figure this one out.
Shipping only to PayPal address seems to be the safest course of action.

I never buy or sell on ebay. Just use it to check prices. I guess I am just old fashioned. But for some reason, I just never trusted it.

So where do you buy and sell and how are they any more secure than Ebay?

ebay warns that sending to a changed address may not have their seller protection.

I've done it a few times for low cost items where someone was moving to/from college, but wouldn't do so for any large amount

Let's say, you needed a special lens adapter that hasn't been manufactured in over 30 years. Where would you go to find it? Camera shops will probably not have it. Flea markets? Good luck! Your best bet is on eBay.

I’ve bought dozens, maybe hundreds, of items on eBay over the years without a single problem. Just check and read the feedback. I haven’t sold anything yet, but it’s a buyer’s environment for sure.

Exactly. Also hard to find replacement parts for older machinery that you can't afford to replace just yet. I do this for my family on a regular basis. 60.00 part VS 6,00.00 replacement........You also have to do the research. Know the right part number. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Move on to the next seller. Same applies for photography equipment.

As a seller, I never send an item the same day. Ever. Even if I can. That's when the BS pops up. Wait until the next day. Or the day after. You can check the 2-3 day handling. If the funds have cleared and no other BS has popped up, send it. If it does, report it.

Over 1,000 transactions and haven't lost a dime. Common sense, people.

I buy from the ABC's and KEH . The only thing I have sold is my film gear, at auction, and I should have kept it.

I love to shop at EBAY. I've been doing so for years. In all that time, I only ever had just 1 problem where the seller was unresponsive. Finally asked EBAY to step in. They did. Instant money back.

Another point of view - I've been buying and selling on eBay for at least 10 yrs, had over $40K in transactions - never have I been scammed. I've purchased/sold household items, auto parts, bicycles and bicycle parts, tons of camera gear, and the biggest single purchase was a 600mm F4, which at the time I paid $6500.

You can call me old-fashioned - many do. I am careful, only selling to verified purchasers, only accepting PayPal as a form of payment, and I look at feedback and number of transactions. I typical limit my sales to people with long standing accounts and 100% positive feedback. But you can't call me paranoid.

Rules like this are entirely reasonable - over the past twenty years {yes, I made my first purchase via eBay - a light meter - twenty years ago} eBay has tilted more and more towards the buyers.

I have changed my shipping address when I needed an item shipped to me away from home. I do this by changing the address when I make the payment. When selling, that is the only way I will accept a change of address.

Thanks for the thought. I simply do not bother with ebay these days. I got burned years ago, and swore off it for life.
